The Soulmate Month Decision: How to Tell Love From Heat
July 1, 2026 · Bill Hajdu · 6 min read

She came in during a Horse month two years ago, not this year, but the energy was similar. She had been in a relationship for about eight months. Things were intense. She said she thought she was in love, but something felt off. She couldn't name it.
I laid out the cards.
The second card she drew landed in the Know Thyself position.
It was a beautiful card to draw. But the card mattered less than where she'd placed it. Not in the Future. Not in the Outcome. In the position that asks: who are you right now, in this situation?
And she looked at the card and said, before I said anything at all: "That's who I want to be. Not who I am."
That was the reading. Everything else just confirmed it.
I'm the Firepig. I've been doing Mahjong card readings for over 35 years. And the thing the Wood Sheep month is going to do, starting July 7, is hand a lot of people a moment like that one.
A moment of decision.
Not a moment of feeling. Feeling is already taken care of. Two fire signs together, the Soulmate Month, wood feeding fire. You're going to feel. The question isn't whether the passion is real. The question is what the passion is pointing at.
That's where the Mirror comes in.
Empty the Cup First
The Mahjong Mirror's discipline before any big decision is the same as the Tao: empty the cup. Don't pour new wine into a full cup. If you're coming into the Soulmate Month with a head full of unprocessed heat from the last two months (the frustration of the Snake month, the exhaustion of the Water Horse month), that heat is going to disguise itself as passion.
It feels like passion. It sounds like passion. But it came from somewhere else.
The Mirror's Second Angle is Know Thyself. In love, that means one question before any conversation, any decision, any confrontation: who are you in this relationship right now?
Not who you want to be. Who you actually are.
Are you someone who's scared? Are you someone who's been neglected and is desperate for connection? Are you someone who is genuinely ready to go deeper? Are you someone who is ready to walk away?
You don't have to have a perfect answer. But you have to stop long enough to ask.
Name the Real Opposition
The Mirror's Third Angle is the Opposition. In most months, the opposition in a love reading is something external. A life-circumstance problem. A compatibility gap. Work schedules, distance, the things people fight about.
In a two-fire month, I see something different.
The opposition is usually the reader themselves.
Not in a self-blame way. In a very literal way: the energy of the month is so charged that your own emotional reaction speed outpaces your decision-making. You respond before you've thought. You escalate before you know what you actually want. You let the heat of the room decide for you.
That's what the Rooster needs to watch for. The tendency to argue, almost for sport, almost because it feels good to be sharp in the moment. In an ordinary month, a sharp word passes. In a two-fire month, a sharp word can undo real relationship work.
The same goes for the Monkey, who can fall into games and clever maneuvering at exactly the wrong time. The Rat, too, who may find the emotional intensity of the Sheep's energy overwhelming and respond by pulling back in ways that look like coldness.
In each case, the opposition isn't the other person. It's the pattern.
Name it. Write it down if you have to. "My pattern in conflict is ___." Fill in the blank honestly, and then decide: is that pattern going to run this month, or are you?
The Decision the Month Is Actually Asking For
Not every sign is going to face a romantic crossroads in the Wood Sheep month. But every sign will face some version of this question: do I lead with what I want, or do I lead with how I feel?
Those aren't the same thing.
If you're in a relationship that has real potential, the Soulmate Month is asking you to name what you want from it. Not in a dramatic way. Not in an ultimatum. Just clearly, inside yourself: what would make this relationship a year from now something I'm proud of? What would make this relationship, a year from now, something I walked away from with regret?
If you're looking for someone new, the month is asking: what do you actually need in a partner, not just what draws you in the first five minutes?
If you're in a relationship that isn't working, the month is asking: is the heat I'm feeling now about passion for this person, or is it the two-fire temperature of the month wearing the face of passion?
The cards don't answer those questions for you. They reflect back what you already know, the way a mirror does, if you look long enough and honestly enough to see it.
What to Do Before the Month Opens
July 7 is days away. Before it arrives:
Sit down with the Second Angle. Write down who you actually are in your relationship right now. Not who you wish you were. Honest, specific, no performance.
Then write down the one thing you want most from the Soulmate Month. One thing. If you can't name it in a sentence, keep working until you can.
That's your compass for the month. When the heat rises, and it will, go back to those two things. They'll tell you whether what you're about to do is moving toward what you want, or whether the month's temperature is deciding for you.
The best love window of the year rewards the people who decide with clarity, not with heat. The Wood Sheep month is generous. It wants to give you something real.
Give it a self that knows what it's asking for.
